Fail to plan, plan to fail

Nah, I don't like this phrase either, however it does sum up everything around data strategy and governance.

Whether you are in a private company, public sector data manager or in an academic research team, the question remains the same - how are you planning to curate, manage and develop your critical data?

When you start (actually before) to collect data, ask yourself why you are collecting it and has it been structured correctly? Do you use meta data catalogues for recording all the important notes, that your future self will thank you for.

Data Quality Assurance

Data Management and Governance principles are vital for the life cycle of the business or fundamental activties of your organisation. However and equally as important is the data quality that informs the downstream analyses and activities that lead to critical business and management intelligence.

Ensuring your data is reliable and accurate doesn't happen by governance alone, it takes knowledge and training to guide and lead you and your organisation to a robust data quality management policies and procedure.

In the modern business environment, we trade in data, never has data been more fundamental to how we shape our business operations and how it guides us for forecasting what direction we go - all these decisions must be made based on accurate data.

Calm Above, Busy Below

A bit like a swan speeding along on a pond, sometimes we are frantically working hard in the background to allow systems to keep up what is happening around our data systems. This is just a fact of life when using mobile and flexible data management systems, moreso when working with external data vendors or partners.

The key to successful dynamic data management is being aware that data may come from many, disparate sources, particularly when managing multi-stakeholder systems or projects, and then planning for how to store and catalogue the data

The number of times I hear that mutiple people have copies of the same data, because there is no coherent logging system, or an index of data sets that can be used across departments or project is staggering.

Strategy, plan and communicate! These are the only things that will keep your workflows running and your data managers sane (and therefore happy).
